Two months since I moved here in LB and can I just say??? I’m starting to love Kpop! Thanks to my housemate Lei, I’ve grown past the phase of judgment on the fans and indifference to Kpop and now I’m actually starting to get crazy over these people (BTS in particular, but I’ll get there later)!

One time I was scrolling through my liked songs on Spotify and I was surprised to see BTS’s Boy With Luv on the list. Why do I have a Kpop song here? BTS’s, no less? Not that I don’t like them, but I couldn’t recall being fond of one of their music. I hardly know of their songs anyway, but I sure heard it and liked it and so it landed on my playlist! I listened to it again and boy WAS IT A GAME CHANGER! LSS it is! :))

My venture into Kpop was fueled by Lei when I saw her practicing the choreography for Twice’s More & More, which was released on June 1st. At first, I didn’t mind, but then I saw a couple of dance covers on Facebook and thought to give it a try! I’m proud that I’m able to do at least the chorus. Just so you know, I don’t dance! I’m pretty much uncomfortable with anything that involves body coordination. I couldn’t bear to watch my videos in grade school where we were required to do a dance number to whatever school event (Buwan ng Wika, Foundation Day, Halloween Party, Christmas Party, etc). My family would always laugh at my videos. I was such an awkward dancer.

On June 26, 3 weeks after Twice released More & More, Blackpink made a comeback with the single How You Like That which had more than 80 million hits on its first day! I see so much support from the Blinks! The moment I saw the music video, I immediately knew why there are so many people going crazy over Blackpink! I guess I watched the MV for at least 5 times before I went to bed. Can’t get over Jennie and Lisa’s sassy moves coming through!

Since then, more Kpop songs have been added to my playlist and I’m not even ashamed of it! Haters to the left! My playlist now contains a concoction of songs mainly from Twice, Blackpink, and BTS. My friend Damian sent me a video of military trainees dancing into Twice’s Like OHH-AHH and I’m just so amazed how the girls were able to elicit smiles—and tears!—from these men who are perceived as rather stoic and serious and snappy. It’s not a usual sight; it’s so unlikely that we see these men dancing, but Twice made them do it! Some of the other Kpop songs I listen to are God’s Menu by Stray Kids, Blueming by IU, and Maria by Hwa Sa—all of these I first heard through Lei’s sound trip. Such an influencer!

Among all of the bands I listen to, I’m most head over heels for BTS. Man, are they all beautiful. Boy with Luv is such a game-changer. I’ve watched almost all their live performances of Boy with Luv and memorized the dance steps! I can now also chant the names of the members along with the ARMYs! (The BTS fanchant has the names of the members in this order: Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jungkook. You can listen to it in the first few seconds of this video!) I’m so drawn to the song I can imagine my own music video playing in my head, except that I cannot dance as perfectly as them! I hope I don’t get a judgment if I say that I have BTS as my phone wallpaper. I say that my bias is V because he’s so handsome a visual, but I find Jin and Jungkook just as attractive! Can I have 3 biases? I hope this is allowed in the Kpop fandom!

I can't believe I'm loving Kpop now. I'm stanning, and I'm stanning harder every single day!
